Yellow Silk
Am I able to use RIT dye to make a purely one color silk jacket even more vibrant in color?
I have a pale yellow silk jacket that I would like to be a much more bright yellow. Can I use a dye like RIT to make it a brighter yellow without damaging the jacket’s fabric?
Rit tends to produce muddy colors. Whether or not your garment can be dyed successfully depends on the fabric (charmeuse, for instance, goes pearly rather than shiny), shrinkage of the fabric is not unlikely, the inner construction of the jacket (interfacings may delaminate or shrink), and the thread it was sewn with (polyester thread doesn’t take the usual dyes, so at best you’ll have light yellow stitching). If the garment says “machine washable”, then you might want to try it. If it says “dry clean only”, I wouldn’t chance it unless it’s something that you don’t mind getting wrecked.
