This year i want to break from routine and make Xmas trinkets to hand out when we visit?
Got any creative ideas (besides biscuits in organza bags) to hand out when we visit the relatives and friends this year. Please, if you could, bear in mind we travel a fair distance to reach them with limited space; and supply me with details or instructions on your idea.
I love Christmas and want to share the joy and festive mood.
I love making Christmas candies for friends and family. One of my friends recently moved out on her own and her mom, knowing I would be delivering treats to her daughter’s new place, actually requested that I drop a bag of treats by her parent’s house too.
You can pick up candy making supplies at craft stores, like chocolate melts (or many grocery stores sell blocks of chocolate), molds, and melting bottles. They even have decorative cellophane bags that you can put your treats in. You can find mint flavored chocolate, or I like to crush up candycanes and put them in white chocolate. They also have peanut butter flavored melts, so you can make little peanut butter cups.
All you have to do is microwave the chocolate melts and pour into molds, much like making cupcakes. If you don’t use plastic bottles sold at the craft store (sometimes the lids pop off if the chocolate starts to cool) I would suggest an old whipped cream tub and a plastic spoon. (For a less fancy, more homemade effect, you can spoon melted chocolate onto wax paper instead of using molds.)
After filling the mold, tap the tray on the table to loosen any bubbles and even out the chocolate, then refrigerate for 15 minutes. I like to buy 3 or 4 molds, so I can fill some while the others are refrigerating. Remove the mold from the fridge, turn it upside down on the table and give it a few taps. If the candies have set up they will pop right out.
Sometimes it takes a lot of candies to fill up the treat bag, so a block of homemade fudge can help a lot. Rachel Ray has a great, easy recipe for 5 minute fudge.
You can also try homemade caramels and tootsie rolls. I’m sure there are recipies for these on the web.
I like this method of gift giving because it spreads holiday cheer, and you aren’t giving someone a gift that will just take up space.
