Wine Stopper
What is best for use as a wine stopper?
so in the past i have used the corks from the bottle, the screw cap (as much as i don’t like them) and wine stoppers i have been given or bought.
my dad has always used a plastic thing which has a valve which he uses something to suck the air out of. is this the best way?
or should i stick with the cork? or wine stoppers?
and does it really change how long the wine stays good for?
From studies I’ve seen the vacuum stoppers and the nitrogen fillers plus refrigeration will help for a few days, perhaps up to a week. They actually just slow down the wine losing flavor, so it’s a losing battle no matter what, and they tended to work better on whites than reds.
The only surefire system is to rebottle the wine in a smaller bottle with a real cap. I suppose if you were opening some really expensive wine it’d be worth it, but generally I’ll just finish the bottle. That’s why I love to find cheap but tasty wines.
