1) yes its pretty much a canister of helium,
2) you put it in the car
3) you take it back to the store and they tend to send it back to the manufacturers who like to re-use these things but check with the store you will be purchasing it from
4) a helium balloon can stay afloat for DAYS, my daughter ince had 1 that lasted fully afloat for 4 days then it started to fail but still lasted another week before i eventually popped the thing
5) foil is by far the bext material but again if you ask in the store they will show you a selection of balloons that would be suitable
