Mulberry Paper
I have three clumps of paper mulberry trees in my back yard, what should I do about them?
My back yard right now is bare and has never been gardened. Amongst the few things growing there are 3 clumps of paper mulberry trees that are each about 40 feet high. The new sprouts they put out are mowed every year, but these trees still have invaded the soil everywhere with their tap roots.
Now I would like to start gardening this yard, but before I start, I am concerned about these invasive trees: what is the best way to deal with them?
Is cutting them down and using RoundUp for the remaining stumps the only way? And if it is, what about the tap roots which are everywhere? Is it possible to garden around them, or will they take up most of the nutrients and water, and thrive on any soil amendments I would make? Should I plant in raised beds to avoid the problem of competition? Thanks for any help!
Hi Agnes, I just had 4 mulberry tree’s cut down. All in the neighbors yard but he said go ahead. I have a woodstove and they will make great firewood. I rented a chainsaw and cut them down and up. I then rented a stump grinder and removed the stumps. I re-planted my lawn with a seeder and 4 weeks later have new grass. The tap roots will die soon enough.
