If economic growth rises from 5% to 10%, is happiness going to double?
Who’s happiness?
I suspect there is far more to any measure of happiness than economic growth, if one could measure happiness.
For one, I would look at the gini coefficient. In the US in the past couple of decades, nearly all of the economic growth went to the rich. The majority of americans actually saw little to negative improvement in thier lifestyle, as the gini coefficient worsened. And since the rich are already rich, one has to wonder if the extra cash made them any happier at all, what with the utility of something decreasing the more you have. I suspect the opposite might also be true, meaning that if we could increase the incomes of the poor a little, it would increase thier happiness far more per dollar than the happiness gained for the rich guy. Anyway, $1 dollar of economic growth might mean anywhere from zero dollars to more than $1 worth of happiness, just depends on who gets the $1 of growth…
