Covers Wedding
I’m thinking about renting wedding chair covers in Cleveland, OH for a flat $2 per chair. Would these sell?
I have 300 chair covers and have noticed that the price to rent these is unbelievable. I want to pass my savings onto other brides but am unsure if there is demand in the market right now. So if you’re from northeast Ohio and looking for high quality low cost chair covers definitely respond to this post!
Sharpen your pencil before you rent them at that price. It sounds far too low.
Of course, you apparently already have the covers, so that’s a “sunk” cost that you don’t have to incur again. But what about the cost of cleaning? I’m sure that most brides would want to think you clean each cover after every wedding. Maybe you can get away without doing that every time. But you will certainly have to so some of them. Let’s say it’s half, or even a third. How much will that cost you? Do they have to be dry-cleaned? If so, it is going to cost more than $2 each.
Even if you can get away with washing them, are you going to do it yourself? How many could you fit into your washing machine at one time? Maybe 10? If it is 10, then you have 30 loads of wash to do, meaning plenty of laundry detergent, plus a huge load of hot water. (People forget that the greatest cost in home washing can be the cost of heating the water, especially if you have an electric water heater.)
Beyond that, you are going to have to iron all of them. How long will that take? Suppose you are a fast ironer, and you can iron, fold, and stack one every 2 minutes. That’s 30 an hour, or 10 hours of ironing to do all of them. If you have other things to do during the day, you will spend 2 days ironing, plus probably a couple of days to do all those loads of wash. Even if you only have to do 100, that still would be over 3 hours of ironing, plus washing and drying.
One more thing: You have 300 now, but how many will you have after you rent them out a few times? Some will get red wine and mustard stains on them and become unusable. Some will get “tired” in the wash (these covers are probably not made for constant use, right? So they’re fairly delicate, I assume.) Eventually, you will have to start replacing them bit by bit.
Don’t get me wrong: I think you have a good idea for a business if you already have invested the money to buy the covers. But I think you should be considering a higher price. Then, advertise in the special wedding planners supplements in newspapers (especially local papers, which are much cheaper than a big city daily). Just make sure you are lower than the competition, and I am sure you will do just fine.
