Bias Cut
Cutting knit fabric on the bias?
I’m making a bias cut skirt, similar to this one: http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa2301.html#i
But the fabric I’m using is a jersey knit instead of woven. I still want it to hang like it is cut on the bias, though. But since knitted fabric’s bias isn’t the same as woven fabric, I’m not sure if I should cut on the bias or not. How should I cut the fabric so that it will have the same flattering drape as woven fabric cut on the bias? Any experienced sewers out there want to throw me a life preserver?

Knit fabrics are a lot more fluid than woven ones. They will drape far more– for lack of a better word– slinkily than wovens. You want a knit for this to be as slinky and form-fitting in the hip/waist as the example you’re showing.
I looked at the video and I’m fairly sure if you lay it out flat, it’s just a square with a hole in the center, and the extra fabric where the points of the square are simply allowed to fall from the hips. It’s a striking and deceptively simple garment; but I think it’s cleverness is all in the shape of the garment itself rather than the way the garment piece is placed on the fabric for cutting.
Had you considered mocking up a version in miniature in a fine knit fabric to test it first? If I weren’t willing to sacrifice some fabric, I’d use a kleenex or a paper towel and an empty glass bottle… something with a waist like the empty ginger ale bottle sitting in front of me.
Cut out a square, cut a hole in the center and drape it over your bottle and see what you get.
