Beverage Napkins

Why are glasses dirty at Olive Garden?
I love to go to Olive Garden. I went there last night, and it was soooo good. There is one thing I can’t stand that happens everytime I go there. The wine and champagne glasses they have on the table and the ones they serve are always dirty!
I realize that sometimes the machines are not always very good at cleaning the glasses, but is that an excuse to serve beverages in a dirty glass? I am not talking about one little smudge either. I can live with that.
The five of us ordered drinks including champagne. The empty wine glasses that were on the table for sampling were dirty so I asked the server to take them away because they were not clean. When she brought our drinks, the champagne glasses were really filthy, and I was just amazed especially since I had already complained.
I, as a server am just surprised. My sister actually took her napkin and wiped the three glasses, because she thinks I am nuts. She didn’t want me to complain. What do you think?
There is an old saying “LIfe is like flying an airplane, your landing has everything to do with your approach”. Let me share some tips that will lay the groundwork so you are in a position to complain without your other dinner guests feeling embarrassed or trying to stop you from what they feel will be “causing a scene”. First of all, and this is the most important, always know your server by name, and call them by name. Personalize the situation. For the most part most dining customers treat wait staff like subservients, they are truly appreciative when a customer takes the time to know there name and USE it. I never complain in front of my other dinner guests, I either call the server to my side and whisper or actually have the server join me away from the table. This prevents the server from being put in the spotlight and feeling challenged and it prevents your other guests from feeling like there is a scene. “Most” servers are genuinley concerned about doing a good job, there tip is there paycheck. They didn’t wash the glasses but should have known what presentation they were making by using them in the first place, but give them a chance to make it right. I sense that by returning with more dirty glasses this server either didn’t care or felt like they wanted to make a statement. I would have had to ask the server quietly “why would you bring more dirty glasses if I just complained about the wine glasses, I am not amused”. Depending on their response it would have been at this point I would have decided to either give them another chance or to quietly locate the manager and request a different server simply explaining that your current server does not have the experience or desire to make your dining experience enjoyable, or let another dining establishment profit from your entertainment dollar. The fact that there are dirty glasses in the first place reflects on management. They are cutting corners either by using water that is not hot enough, not using enough detergent, or skipping the use of a rinse agent, all to save a buck. But whatever you do, be nice. My definition of tact is “the ability to tell someone to go to hell so nicely that they actually look forward to the trip”. Ever wonder what TIP acutually stands for: “To Insure Promptness”, I wonder what you left for this server……..
