my cat just had kittens what should I do to provide for her?
its my first cat since I was a kid. she had 5 beautiful kittens I did move them cause she had them behind an old couch in the shed on the floor didnt think that was healthy or safe. So I took an basket lined it with a memory pillow and linens she tried a few times to take them back but I wouldnt let her so now they are in my room. put them in a corner and made a tint so she could have privacy. so whats next?
This early, you must just LEAVE them. Dont touch the kittens, but do make sure that all the kittens are getting the milk. Make sure there warm and have privacy.
You must give the mother extra food (not too much extra though) as she has to provide for her kittens. Keep the bed clean, the kittens will do their buisness in their bed, dont change it too often (change about twice/once a day) because the smell of the kittens will fade and you could be risking rejection, just change it a blanket at a time, as she should have more than one towels/blankets, unless its very messy.
At about 3-4 weeks the kittens will be leaving their bed and so if their “nest” is upstairs, i suggest moving it downstairs and they could fall down the stairs. You need to handle them quite alot now, fussing, stroking them, to get them use to human contact so they’ll be great pets, and also – teach them how to play. You can give them special kitten milk, and a bit of WET cat/kitten food, and gradually build it up, its better to give them 4 smaller meals a day, then 2 big meals.
Place a litter box near them and usually cats pick it up very quickly, alot easier than dogs.
At about 6-8 (8 is usually best) the mom will get sick of the kittens, and it will be time for them to “fly the nest”
